Movie Review: 3 Days to Kill

3 Days to Kill movie review

3 Days to Kill is a fast-paced thriller that should keep audiences captivated this weekend. Kevin Costner (who seems to be in every movie this year) does a fine job as Ethan Renner, a Secret Service agent dying of cancer who wants to reconnect with his daughter and estranged wife. Before seeing the film, all I knew about it was the cast and a vague definition of the plot, but it ended up surprising me with how interesting it was.

Ethan Renner (Costner) is headed back to Paris, where he will see his long-estranged wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and his daughter, Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld). When his wife asks him if he's out of "the business," he says yes, but soon an intriguing offer from Vivi (Amber Heard), who claims to work for the CIA, gets him back in the biz - that is, the biz of killing for hire, to wipe out bad guys. The bad guy in question is The Wolf (Richard Sammel) and his associate, The Albino (Tómas Lemarquis), terrorists who like blowing up buildings. The payment that Vivi will give Ethan is a nice chunk of cash, for Zoey's college fund, as well as something a bit more timely: an experimental drug that could save his life.

The cast was great in this movie, especially Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Amber Heard, and the terrorists. My one complaint about the film is that we never really learn what the terrorists did, exactly, to put them on the CIA's hit list: we know they're "the bad guy" but that's about it. I was surprised by how well Costner did in an action movie, considering he's 59 years old; this film reminded me a bit of the Die Hard series with Bruce Willis, actually, except the daughter played a bigger role.

Yes, see this film. It kept my attention throughout its runtime and was a pretty good action movie compared to others I have seen recently. The cinematography for this film happened to be gorgeous, as well, since it takes place in Paris (one of my favorite cities, which I traveled to in April '12), and a lot of the night scenes are especially pretty. I'm looking forward to seeing Costner in more movies soon, too - he's in Draft Day this April, which I've actually already seen, and is filming a few more that might be out this year or early 2015.

3 Days to Kill is in theaters today, February 21st, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 113 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.
