Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I remember liking The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, even though it was reboot of a franchise (with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst) that was still fresh in my mind. I liked this version as well, but it's weaker than the first installment in the franchise; there are too many plot holes and character inconsistencies overall.

Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), aka Spider-Man, and his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) have been having some relationship problems lately ... probably due to the fact of him running around NYC and missing important events such as their high school graduation. They agree to separate since Gwen may be going to London for school, but they keep being drawn back together. Meanwhile, Peter's friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), heir to the Oscorp empire, is back in town after the death of his father, and wants to rekindle their friendship. When Oscorp employee Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) accidentally plunges into a pool of electric eels, though, and becomes Electro, Spider-Man has a new foe to battle, and Gwen starts to worry more about him.

The screening that I went to for this movie was unfortunately not in 3D, but I could see the 3D being really cool, as Spider-Man swings around NYC in many scenes; IMAX would also be great for this film. Garfield and Stone have great chemistry, which doesn't surprise me because they're currently dating in real life, and it was good to get some fresh blood in this installment such as Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan. Sally Field is back as Peter Parker's aunt and guardian, and Paul Giamatti has a small role as a convict, both at the beginning and end of the movie.

Yes, see this film - just be aware that it's definitely a "popcorn flick" and not one to mull over too much, or you might begin to spot its inconsistencies. The ending of the movie definitely leaves it open for a third installment, and it should be interesting to see where the plot goes in that one. I've heard that there is a post-credit scene - a scene from the new X-Men movie - although we did not get to see it, since Sony and Fox are competitors (competing studios), so make sure to stay after the credits to see that.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in theaters today, May 2nd, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 142 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.
