Movie Review: The November Man

The November Man ended up being a highly entertaining spy film, and proves that Pierce Brosnan has still "got it." The movie hops all over the globe in order to take down a soon-to-be Russian president, and the acting and characters are superb.

Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) used to be one of the most sought-after CIA agents, but after an accident, he retires to Switzerland. Five years later, one of his ex-handlers, Hanley (Bill Smitrovich), recruits him for one last mission, as a woman who is deep undercover in the Russian government has specifically asked for Devereaux, and only Devereaux, to extract her. Devereaux flies to Russia, only to find that the situation is more complicated than he originally thought; he also runs into Mason (Luke Bracey), his former CIA partner.

The action in this movie starts the moment the film begins, and doesn't let up until the very end. Brosnan is fantastic in his role as the ex-CIA operative (no doubt his years as James Bond trained him well for this), and I may have Googled "Pierce Brosnan age" when I got home (answer: 61) because he definitely doesn't look his age. There are other actors sprinkled in here too that you may recognize from other films/TV shows: Smitrovich, Luke Bracey, Olga Kurylenko, Will Patton, and Eliza Taylor, to name a few.

Yes, see this movie. It does have a few plot holes, but because the rest of it is so good, I can overlook them. I was curious as to what the title of the film meant, but it's explained near the end of the movie by one of the characters. I'd like to see Brosnan in more action films, as he was one of my favorite James Bond actors, and this movie makes me wonder why he hasn't been in similar movies recently; I think the last film I saw him in was 2012's Salvation Boulevard, at a film fest, which wasn't that great. I will say that The November Man was gorier than I thought it would be, though, and I wouldn't recommend it for kids; otherwise, it's a great spy movie that I'd recommend for any and all adults to see.

The November Man is currently playing in theaters, and is rated R with a runtime of 108 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.
