Movie Review: Now You See Me 2

I reviewed Now You See Me back in May 2013, and I gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. This film is even flashier than the first, if that's possible, and still very enjoyable; there have been some shakeups in the cast, but the additions help round out the new cast nicely.

The Four Horsemen have been separated for a year after their stunts in the first film, and Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman) is still in jail. They try to make their grand re-appearance at a tech conference, hypnotizing the leader, but then a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) disrupts the conference; when the Four Horsemen escape, they suddenly find themselves in Macau, where the genius has a proposition for them. The Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and the newest addition, Lizzy Caplan) are not in a position to say no, and they must find and steal private information from a locked vault. At the same time, FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) has just been exposed for being involved with the Horsemen, and the FBI is on the hunt for him as well as the Horsemen.

We've swapped out Isla Fisher for Lizzy Caplan in this film, but I've been a fan of hers since Mean Girls, and to me the transition was practically seamless. Michael Caine is back for this installment, as well, and Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter) has a part as a villain, which was fun to see. Jay Chou also has a small part, as a magic shop owner in Macau, and Sanaa Lathan (The Perfect Man) as another FBI agent.

Yes, see this film. I'll admit to being dazzled by flashy films, and there were so many scenes in this movie that were extremely fun to watch. Interestingly enough, I was thinking that movie wasn't quite as good as its predecessor, but I did give that film 3.5 out of 5 stars and I'm giving this one 4, so perhaps I need to rewatch that one. The cast works great together again in this film, and both Caplan and Radcliffe are a welcome addition to the crew. The movie does have a complete ending, but leaves it open to a 3rd film, if they so choose, and I would definitely see that in theaters if they decided to make one.

Now You See Me 2 is in theaters today, June 10th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 129 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.
