Movie Review: Blended

Those of you who are long-time readers of my blog may be shocked by this review - Adam Sandler movies are usually hit or miss for me, but this one was truly hilarious, and may in fact be the funniest movie I've seen in a while. I'm guessing that Drew Barrymore (and the writers, of course) may have something to do with that, but I was pleasantly surprised at how funny the film ended up being.

Newly-divorced Lauren (Barrymore) goes out on a date with newly-widowed Jim (Adam Sandler), and it does not go well - he takes her to Hooters and makes her split the bill with him. She ends up seeing him again, though, and they both find out that her friend Jen (Wendi McClendon-Covey) just broke up with her boyfriend - coincidentally, Jim's boss - and won't be going on their trip to Africa. Barrymore and her two boys really need a vacation, and Jim and his three girls do too, and they both end up going to Africa and pretending that they are Jen and her boyfriend - which involves the "romance" hotel package and more.

I think part of the reason I liked this movie so much was that the "crude humor" jokes were kept to a minimum, and Barrymore and Sandler always go well together (think 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer). There are also random cameos from people who were in both of those movies, too, as well as McClendon-Covey as Barrymore's friend and business partner, and Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) as Sandler's coworker. Sandler and Barrymore's kids in the movie also play great parts.

Yes, see this movie. You may be shocked at the star rating I give this film, but it truly deserves it - it kept me laughing throughout the entire film, as well as the rest of the audience. It would get a 5 out of 5 star rating from me except some of the characters (minor ones) could have been fleshed out more - Lauren's ex, for example, is a bit of a tool, and some of his lines are pretty cringe-worthy. Blended is a film the whole family can enjoy, though, and it should do extremely well at the box office based on its stellar cast.

Blended is in theaters today, May 23rd, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 117 minutes. 4.5 stars out of 5.
