The Friday Five, 6/18/21: 5 things I've been up to this week

This Monday was the first day I actually tried eating healthy, with a break on Wed. night for an influencer foodie event ... and I weighed myself this morning and I was UP 2-3 pounds, which was pretty disappointing. I have "salt fingers" this morning, as I call it (had salty foods yesterday, fingers are bloated) so I'm hoping that has something to do with it. I'll be on vacation Sunday through Tuesday though and won't be watching calories those days.

What I've been up to this week:
  1. Cooking. I had Martha & Marley Spoon this week, which I've only tried one other time before, and so far both of the meals have been pretty good—the Chili-Rubbed Pork Tenderloin that you see above as well as a Chicken Curry with Buttered Naan. Next week I'm going back to Home Chef—like once a year they sent me discounts, and this time it was four weeks at $25 off per week (so, $35 per box; more than I usually pay, but I really like HC). Originally I had a $25 Dinnerly box scheduled but I'll go back to that in a few weeks. I have one EveryPlate box scheduled for $23.95 too, I think the week after this one.
  2. Playing Drag Queen Bingo with Yelp Cincinnati ... and winning a hotel stay! Our Yelp Detroit enewsletter had a fun event in it this week, a drag queen bingo event (virtual) that Yelp Cincinnati was hosting, so I signed up for it and "attended" yesterday. It was pretty fun—I wasn't sure how they were going to do the bingo cards and it turned out there was a website we used. I was actually the third person to call BINGO! (and unmute myself, obviously) but the first two chose different prizes; one person was in Canada so she chose a cocktail shaker set, I believe, and the other was in Cincy but pregnant so she chose one of the alcohol gift sets for her husband. I have never been to Cincinnati but it's about a 4.5 hour drive, so I chose the 2-night hotel stay at the 21C Museum Hotel! It looks super nice, so I'm excited to try it out. A friend told me that Kings Island is only like 25 minutes away from Cincinnati, too, so maybe if I go this summer I can go there for the first time too—it's owned by Cedar Point and a lot of the rides look similar.
  3. Seeing friends. On Sunday I met up with a Yelp friend in Ferndale—she had never been to Ferndale before, so we went to Imperial, one of my favorite places, and I had elote (corn), their specialty taco of the month (pulled pork and an apple slaw with BBQ sauce), and my usual hot dog, the Bakersfield, which is topped with pulled pork and pineapple.
  4. Seeing Cruella in the theater! My mom and I went to Emagine Novi last Saturday to see it. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5—overall I really enjoyed it, I just wish it was a little shorter, and it's about 2 hours and 20 minutes long. I kept my mask on for most of the movie, when I wasn't eating snacks, especially because a group of about 5+ people sat right next to us ... Emagine is still blocking off two seats between parties, so the person sitting "next" to me should have been three seats away, but instead she sat two seats away, because apparently she can't count. My purse was on the seat next to me so that held a placeholder at least. Very much not looking forward to next week when theaters and restaurants can do 100% capacity.
  5. Going to an influencer event at Lefty's in Southfield. I think this was my first influencer event during the pandemic! Not including when Gift of India invited me for my Instagram, last summer, since that was just my boyfriend and I. Julian from @motorcitymunchers invited me, and I brought along Becki (whom you might know as the other reviewer on my book blog), so it was fun to catch up with her too. We tried their new brisket sub, which is actually named after him (the Motor City Munchers sub!) as well as their brisket fries. The sub was a bit spicy for me—it has Carolina Reaper cheese on it—but the brisket fries were super tasty. We also tried out their new wings, which are debuting this upcoming Monday (6/21/21), and those were fantastic—I don't usually like dry rubs, but the Lemon Pepper wings were really good. There are a few Lefty's around this area and it looks like the one on Woodward, in Royal Oak, is closest to me, so I'll have to try them out again soon.
