BAFTA nominees announced today

The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nominees were announced today, according to their website.

And the nominees for the major awards are:
(my choices for the winners are in italics)

Best Film:
-Black Swan
-Inception
-The Social Network
-The King's Speech
-True Grit

Outstanding British Film:
-127 Hours
-Another Year
-Four Lions
-The King's Speech
-Made in Dagenham

Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer:
-The Arbor
-Exit Through the Gift Shop
-Four Lions
-Monsters
-Skeletons

~I haven't seen any of these but have heard good things about Banksy's "Exit Through the Gift Shop."

Director:
-127 Hours - Danny Boyle
-Black Swan - Darren Aronofsky
-Inception - Christopher Nolan
-The King's Speech - Tom Hooper
-The Social Network - David Fincher

Original Screenplay:
-Black Swan
-The Fighter
-Inception
-The Kids are All Right
-The King's Speech

Adapted Screenplay:
-127 Hours
-The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
-The Social Network
-Toy Story 3
-True Grit

Animated Film:
-Despicable Me
-How to Train Your Dragon
-Toy Story 3

Leading Actor:
-Javier Bardem - Biutiful
-Jeff Bridges - True Grit
-Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network
-Colin Firth - The King's Speech
-James Franco - 127 Hours

~Interesting how Javier Bardem snuck in here. Also nice to see the Brits recognizing "True Grit," as they were snubbed by the Golden Globes.

Leading Actress:
-Annette Bening - The Kids are All Right
-Julianne Moore - The Kids are All Right
-Natalie Portman - Black Swan
-Noomi Rapace - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
-Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit

~Another two sneak in - Noomi Rapace and Hailee Steinfeld. Steinfeld was great but I think Portman still has a lock on this category.

Supporting Actor:
-Christian Bale - The Fighter
-Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
-Pete Postlethwaite* - The Town
-Mark Ruffalo - The Kids are All Right
-Geoffrey Rush - The King's Speech

Supporting Actress:
-Amy Adams - The Fighter
-Helena Bonham Carter - The King's Speech
-Barbara Hershey - Black Swan
-Leslie Manville - Another Year
-Miranda Richardson - Made in Dagenham

~Looks like Melissa Leo (for The Fighter) was snubbed, but I was happy to see Barbara Hershey nominated for her role as Portman's mother in Black Swan.

Orange Wednesdays Rising Award**:
-Gemma Arterton
-Andrew Garfield
-Tom Hardy
-Aaron Johnson
-Emma Stone

~I like a lot of these young actors but I have a feeling Garfield will win this, especially since he's British and this is the only award that the public themselves vote on.

*Posthumous nomination
**This is the only award voted on by the public. It is an award that "recognize[s] five international actors and actresses whose talent has captured the imagination of the British public."

Overall, some interesting and new choices, deviating from the nominees of the CCAs and Golden Globes. It should be interesting to see if the winners follow those of the CCAs/Golden Globes as well, or if the Brits have their own favorites - also if "True Grit" wins any awards, since they were shut out at the Golden Globes, though they have three major category nominations here.
