Movie Review - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Avengers #2)

I reviewed the first Avengers movie in May 2012, and I'm a big Marvel fan, so I was excited for this installment. Age of Ultron brings the same flash and action first movie while adding a few new characters, and fans of the group or the individual Avengers will not be disappointed.

In this movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has created something of an artificial intelligence program, which breaks into and takes over his standard assistant program, JARVIS. The new system calls itself Ultron (voiced by James Spader), and quickly decides that it wants to destroy the world, including Stark; it takes on a robot form to do so. Stark has many enemies, including Russian twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), who have special powers, and they team up to take down him and the rest of the team. The Avengers find themselves racing against time in order to save the world, and recruiting new and old friends to help them do so.

The newbies in this version were Taylor-Johnson and Olsen, as well as Spader as Ultron's voice; I love Spader in The Blacklist (and formerly in Boston Legal) and he was a good choice for the role, as his voice is instantly recognizable. Taylor-Johnson and Olsen were also a good choice for the twins, whom initially side with Ultron but later realize he might not have the same interests in mind that they do. The all-star cast who makes up the Avengers is of course back in this film - Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and RDJ - and we also have stars from the first film such as Don Cheadle and Anthony Mackie.

Yes, see this film. I will say that I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was a bit overwhelming; I don't usually get headaches from 3D movies but I had a slight headache after this one, so that's something to keep in mind if 3D usually affects you like that. However, I will say it was awesome to see it in IMAX, as the screen was huge. As in Marvel/Joss Whedon fashion, there is a teaser scene midway through the credits, but there is NO scene at the very end of the credits, so don't waste your time sitting through those if you don't want to. Although this summer will have a few blockbuster movies, such as the new Mission : Impossible, Age of Ultron kicks off the summer blockbusters in spectacular fashion, and is worth shelling out the bucks to see it on the big screen, even if you don't see it in 3D.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is in theaters today, May 1st, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 141 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.
