Movie Review: Trainwreck


The trailer for Trainwreck looked hilarious, and I was excited to see it. I had actually never heard of Amy Schumer before I first saw the trailer, but she's a very successful comic, and in this film she used those skills to her advantage.

Amy (Amy Schumer) was taught by her father that monogamy is unrealistic, so the norm for her is one-night stands rather than relationships. Her sister, Kim (Brie Larson) is happily married, but Amy knows that's not the life for her. When Amy's magazine editor (Tilda Swinton) assigns her a story on a sports doctor, Aaron (Bill Hader), she ends up going on a date with him, and he slowly wins her over to the idea of a relationship with him.

I do like Bill Hader (he was great in last year's The Skeleton Twins, as well), and although I have never seen him as a romantic lead in a movie before, he and Schumer had great chemistry here. Other standouts were Tilda Swinton, as Amy's boss (who I almost didn't recognize, she's usually so androgynous), LeBron James, as himself (a surprisingly good actor!), and Brie Larson, as Amy's sister. Randall Park (TV's Fresh off the Boat) has a small role here as a coworker of Amy's, too, as well as Ezra Miller (Perks of Being a Wallflower), as a quirky intern at the company. Judd Apatow is known for having many cameos in his films, too, and this one was no exception; I won't spoil them for you, but some of them are on IMDb if you choose to look before seeing the movie.

Yes, see this movie. The film is quite raunchy (hence its R-rating) but also very funny. Although the trailer was funnier than the movie (and I also noticed they edited the movie a bit from certain parts in the trailer), the film is still worth seeing if you like comedies, and the cast works well together. It's a film that I think I would watch again on Blu-ray, as well, because I love good rom-coms, and this qualifies as such.

Trainwreck is in theaters today, July 17th, & is rated R with a runtime of 125 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.
