Movie Review: The Fate of the Furious
The film opens in Cuba, where Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his new wife, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), are on their honeymoon. He stops on the street one day to help a woman who is having car problems (Charlize Theron), only to find out that she knows who he is - and she wants him to work for her, thus double-crossing his own team. We later find out that she has quite a compelling reason for him to switch sides, but his team doesn't know this - they only know he crossed them. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Letty, Deckard (Jason Statham), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and Tej Parker (Ludacris) must again reunite in order to stop Dom and Cipher (Theron) from stealing Russian nukes, which in her hands would be quite dangerous.
I believe I've said this before, but with each passing Fast and the Furious film, the stunts get bigger and bolder. The screening of this movie that I attended was at a theater with a rather large screen, and it was great fun to watch all of the car stunts in this movie. Though the dialogue is not the best at times, the film did have a discernible plot, too, and it was interesting to see Dom have to go up against his team, including The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) as well as his now-wife, Letty.
Yes, see this movie, and see it somewhere with a great movie screen. The beginning scenes in Cuba are very fun to watch, as well - we get a glimpse of Cuban culture (and, of course, the car racing culture there). This is also the first Fast and the Furious movie without Paul Walker, but there are a few nice references to him throughout, as well as a very touching homage near the end of the film. I highly recommend this movie for anyone that loves action films, and it should due well at the box office based on its fan base.
The Fate of the Furious is in theaters today, April 14th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 136 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.
