The Friday Five, 9/3/21: 5 things I've been up to this week

I'm writing this from a friend's living room in Sharon, MA, where I'll be until Sunday. My aunt and uncle live in Sharon as well so I'm meeting up with them and my cousins on Saturday for a BBQ.

What I've been up to this week:

  1. Traveling. As I mentioned above, I'm going to be in Massachusetts and Rhode Island for about a week. The MA portion is about 3 days and then I'll be in RI for about 3 days; my mom's side lives in MA and my dad's side lives in RI, and I lived in MA until I was 5 and we moved to the Midwest. I hadn't been on a plane since January 2020 (pre-COVID) so yesterday was interesting ... it was hard to wear a mask in the airport but mostly only because I double-masked. I think next time I will wear a single mask in the airport (when shlepping around) and then double-mask before I get on the plane.
  2. Watching movies. Last Friday I did not go to the theater because the only thing playing I wanted to see was Reminiscence, and I heard that was terrible, so if anything I may check it out on HBO Max. Instead I watched He's All That, the Netflix remake of She's All That, and it was cute; I'd give it 3/5 stars. I want to rewatch the old one now but it's not streaming anywhere. On Saturday, my parents and I watched Beckett, on Netflix, which was pretty bad ... my dad was like "How did Denzel let him make this movie??" (his son is in it, LOL). After that I watched Vacation Friends on Hulu though and that was pretty funny—I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
  3. Getting takeout/eating out. On Saturday, my parents and I got Cottage Inn takeout (see below for a pic), on Sunday my boyfriend and I went to The Great Greek for dinner, since I had won a $10 gift certificate. On Tuesday, we went to Imperial in Ferndale—I like to get their elote (corn; pictured above), tacos, and hot dogs. I tried their hot dog of the month and taco of the week and they were okay, but next time I will stick with my "old familiars" there. Also, yesterday my aunt and cousin and I had some pizza takeout, in RI, which was good.
  4. Trying new TV shows. I found a new show on HBO Max called The Other Two, with Molly Shannon, which is pretty good, and apparently just started its 2nd season; it was (is?) a Comedy Central show originally. I started watching Clickbait on Netflix, which is very good so far, but I'm waiting to watch more of it with my aunt in RI next week. A friend recommended Blindspotting on Starz, and I binged that very quickly (eight half-hour episodes) this week; if you are a fan of the movie, you'll like the show too, although the characters are all different. I also started Only Murders in the Building, on Hulu, which is pretty interesting so far, and a great cast—Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. And I've been continuing to watch Nine Perfect Strangers, although this week's episode was just okay.
  5. Book club. My book club likes to meet up at the Sundquist Pavilion in downtown Farmington, as it's a comfortable area and also there's a public bathroom right there (bonus, for me). This month's book was Nothing to See Here, by Kevin Wilson, and it had a pretty unique premise: two children of a senator alight into flames whenever they get stressed or mad.
