The Friday Five, 8/12/22: 5 things I've been up to this week

This week went by rather fast, and also had a lot of delicious foods, as my boyfriend's parents were in town so we went out with them a few times. This weekend is shaping up to be busy, too: I'm meeting a friend at Ocean Prime later for happy hour (even though I don't eat seafood, haha, but they have other things too), then seeing a movie. Tomorrow I'm hanging out with friends in Ann Arbor and on Sunday my boyfriend and I are seeing the Beach Boys at Meadow Brook.

Temptations musical Detroit

What I've been up to this week:

  1. Seeing "Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations" at the Detroit Opera House. This was probably one of the best musicals I've seen in quite a while. On Wednesday, a friend and I carpooled to Detroit, had dinner at Mootz (more on that below), and went to see this, at the Opera House. Because it was technically the "opening night" (even though the first performance was Tues.), they had a red carpet, and a lot of celebrities attended, including Otis Williams, one of the original Temptations members, which was pretty awesome. The show is playing at the OH until August 28th, and I highly, highly recommend it—it was like going to a Motown concert.
  2. Dining out. Probably wayyyy too much, but everything was delicious. Last Friday, I was planning on cooking at home, but my boyfriend's parents were in town, so I ended up meeting them at Green Lantern in Berkley. Pro tip: ask for the "round deep dish," which is not on the menu—the waiter wasn't even sure what I was talking about at first, but they basically stack two round crusts, and it's delicious. I don't know of any other pizza places in this area that do that, too. On Saturday night, we went to Witch's Hat in South Lyon, which is always good, and on Sunday we went to Taqueria San Jose, this tiny hole-in-the-wall in Waterford which my boyfriend and I had ordered Doordash from before, and for Korean BBQ at Korea Palace for dinner, which was a new KBBQ place for me—I usually go to Chung Ki Wa, literally across the street from KP. KP was very good though so I will be back. On Monday we got Doordash for lunch from La Marra (not to be confused with "La Marsa"), in Oak Park, which is always good, too, and on Wednesday a friend and I went to Mootz Pizzeria in Detroit before the Temptations show. Mootz is one of my FAVORITE Detroit pizzerias—it's a little expensive, but you get what you pay for, because everything is delicious.
  3. Not cooking ... On Tuesday, I was supposed to receive a Marley Spoon box with four recipes. I like MS because they usually give you printed cards, too. On Sunday or Monday I received an email saying that due to an error at their facility, I wouldn't be receiving any printed cards ... okay, NBD, I can use the app ... but then on the day of, I noticed there wasn't much tracking info listed, which meant it was going to be late, and then I received an email saying that due to errors, it wouldn't be arriving at ALL, which was a major bummer. My boyfriend actually had ordered a two-meal, four-serving Blue Apron box for the same day, though, both with seafood entrees, so we cooked one of those on Tuesday but I subbed in chicken for the shrimp, for myself. It's unusual that the box doesn't show up at ALL—I think this is only the 2nd time that's happened, and it was a different service last time—but it was still a bummer, albeit a #firstworldproblem for sure.
  4. Watching TV shows. Industry on HBO Max is back so I'd like to check that out (season 2) but first, Never Have I Ever on Netflix came back today, which is one of my favorites. I also started Paper Girls on Prime, with Ali Wong, which is pretty good—I feel like Prime never advertises any of their shows, too, except maybe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—and I finished Uncoupled on Netflix, which ended up being cute, but ended on a cliffhanger, so I hope there is a second season. My boyfriend and I also started The Sandman, on Netflix, which is decent so far; our TV tastes overlap in dramas and sci-fi. Today I need to finish Married at First Sight from this week, too, and I also want to catch up on Grownish. Prime has an A League of their Own TV show remake out too today that I'd like to see at some point.
  5. Not seeing a concert. On Sunday, I had tickets to see the Goo Goo Dolls at Freedom Hill, which had been rescheduled from 2020 to 2021 and now 2022. I have never seen GGD in concert and they're one of my favorite 1990-2000's band. The original friend I was supposed to go with has to work early on Mondays, so she sold her ticket to another of my friends, but then THAT friend's mom was sick, and they weren't sure if it was COVID or not, so she had to decline. We had lawn tickets and it had been raining a bit and also was supposed to be 90 degrees, so I ended up selling the tickets. Ticket Pickers on Facebook is a good page/site that I've used before, and they actually paid me $35 per ticket, which was excellent (I paid $20 on Groupon back in 2020), since the lawn was sold out. So that worked out, but I'd still like to see GGD in concert some day ... hopefully.
