The Friday Five, 7/11/25: 5 things I've been up to this week

Apologies for no Friday Five the past two weeks, but I'm back at it today, even though I have to leave soon for an equipment supplier visit for work, in Shelby Twp. (a 45- to 55-min. drive). Two weeks ago I was in Rhode Island, so I had planned on not doing a Friday Five, but last week was 4th of July and I completely forgot. (oops)

What I've been up to *the past two* weeks:
  1. Visiting Rhode Island. My parents, husband, and I went because my cousin was getting married, but it was also an excuse to visit family. We arrived on a Tuesday and we were there until Sunday, with the wedding being that Saturday night and the welcome party being the night before, on Friday. It was a good visit: I got to see like 99% of my Rhode Island family, which is rare (most were at the wedding/welcome party) and we also drove to Massachusetts one day to see that side of the family (my mom's brother, aka my uncle, and my aunt and cousins and their kids). I didn't have time to do as many touristy things (Newport, etc.) but it was still a very fun trip.
  2. Fourth of July festivities. I had last Friday off work, for the 4th of July, and my husband and I hung out with friends in South Lyon. The friends made brisket—an all day thing, they started it at 7:30am in the smoker and it was ready by 6:30pm for dinner—as well as all sorts of delicious side dishes. Their subdivision also does a community fireworks show, the residents pool funds and some of the residents are actually the ones who set the off, too, and that was fun; I don't think I've ever been so close to fireworks before, even though the Walled Lake show I go to yearly with my parents and husband is also really good (but further away, on the lake).
  3. Eating out/getting takeout. So many good meals but here were a few of my favorites: Agave in Narragansett, RI on our first night there, for steak tacos for me and tres leches cake, plus horchata; plus The Coast Guard House on our last afternoon, with an ocean view, also in Narragansett. Last week, I had dinner with a coworker friend at the Tiki Boil in Walled Lake—aka Bayside, it didn't become Tiki Boil until a few years ago—and had a delicious mocktail, it actually tasted alcoholic because they put pina colada mix in it, plus the lake view was nice, even though it was like 90 degrees out that day (and every day this month; why??). And then this week, my husband and I had Culver's takeout last night, and I had dinner with a friend on Sunday at Barrio, in Plymouth, which was a first-time visit for me ... everything was very good, albeit a bit pricey ($15 for three street tacos, and $5-ish for horchata).
  4. Getting a prenatal massage. My generous sister-in-law gifted this to me as part of our baby shower present, and I went to MassageLuxe in WB for it this past Tuesday. I was actually already in their computer system because in January 2020, I signed up for a membership—they were doing a fabulous deal at the time, $10 for your first massage and $60 for your second, aka like $70 for two massages—and then I canceled after those two (but it kinda worked out, because then March 2020 aka COVID hit). The massage on Tuesday was very relaxing, although it felt odd to be on my side instead of my stomach for it (can't lay on your stomach while pregnant).
  5. Seeing movies at the theater. Last night I saw the new Superman, and really enjoyed it—David Corenswet, a relative newcomer, plays Superman, as well as Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (a favorite show of mine) as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Hoult played it over-the-top and it was great, and Corenswet plus Brosnahan and the rest of the supporting cast were also fabulous. I'd probably give the movie 4/5 overall, 4.5/5 if I'm being generous. The week before that, I saw the new Jurassic World movie, and it was fun, but kinda stressful, TBH ... I felt like every scene was them being chased by dinosaur(s), which didn't leave much time for plot exposition. I would give that one 3.5/5, it's still worth seeing at the theater though.
