The Friday Five, 7/25/25: 5 things I've been up to this week
I know I always say this, but: it's been a long week, with kind of a plot twist happening yesterday that I wasn't expecting, so the weekend may feel even longer.
What I've been up to this week:
- Seeing Postmodern Jukebox at the Fisher Theatre, Detroit. I was lucky enough to have media tickets to this—I saw them last year with a friend at the Fillmore, my first time seeing them, and I love their music. If you're unfamiliar with them: they basically take newer (70's/80's/90's and newer) songs and put a fresh twist on them, whether that be slowing them down, speeding them up, etc., and their outfits are great too; sometimes they'll wear flapper-type outfits, a la 1920's, or other sparkly things. I took my mom this year and they put on a fabulous show.
- Baby classes. Last Friday, I took a virtual breastfeeding class through Henry Ford Detroit, which overall was informative. My husband and I also took a virtual "how to communicate once baby is born"-type of class, through Beaumont (whatever—Corewell, but I will continue to call them Beaumont) which wasn't as useful IMO. Tomorrow my parents are taking a virtual grandparents refresher class type of thing, also through Henry Ford, and we were going to do it here at my house, but now can't (long story there) so I will try to walk them through the tech details later today instead, via video chat.
- Maternity photos. On Sunday, my husband and I trekked up to Clarkston (anything longer than 15 minutes is a trek, LOL, but Clarkston is like 35 without traffic) to take some maternity photos with our wedding photographer, Neri. We are lucky because she is normally based in Holland (MI) but was already in the Metro Detroit area that day to shoot an engagement party, I believe it was. The shoot only took about 30 minutes but I'm excited to see how they turn out; we went to this garden-type area next to a hospital, and it was very pretty, although I'm still suffering bug bites this week from it.
- Seeing movies, kinda ... I went to Emagine Novi yesterday to see the new Fantastic Four, but ended up seeing like the first half-hour and then bits and pieces of it, because unfortunately I fell asleep for almost the entire movie (I'm 35 weeks pregnant this week + their recliners are comfy...), which was a bummer. I did like what I saw, so hopefully I can catch it on streaming at some point. I also rewatched Waitress on Hulu this week, since I had seen the musical last week, and it's a lot of fun; however, it is starting to seem a little dated (it came out in 2007). The actor who plays the old man, Joe, in that movie, is still my favorite Joe out of all of the iterations I've seen, though, and Keri Russell does a great job as Jenna, the lead character, too. I've now seen it three times on Broadway, I think (regular Broadway, with Sara Bareilles as Jenna, which was fantastic; Broadway in Detroit, maybe 1-2x; and the Yelp event last week).
- Visiting daycares. The original plan for today was that we would both take today off work, so my husband and I could check out six daycares, because our baby will ideally be starting daycare in December 2025 or January 2026. Unfortunately, things often change, and we were not able to visit any of them today. On Monday, however, we did visit a local one that we both liked. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule the other visits to next week or the week after.
- Eating out/getting takeout and delivery. Bonus #6 this week because I forgot to squeeze this one in. Last Friday, we got our favorite Pink Garlic (Indian food) delivered from Doordash, since I had the breastfeeding class 6-8pm. On Saturday night, I saw my parents, so we got Hungry Howie's takeout, and on Sunday, after the photo shoot, we went to Union Woodshop in Clarkston—I'll be honest, this was one of the main reasons I agreed to trek to Clarkston because I snagged a reservation there and hadn't tried them before, only their sister restaurants (Honcho, for Mexican food, and Clarkston Union, for American food, both times before concerts at Pine Knob), and I had been wanting to for a while. Everything was delicious and I would definitely go back. Finally, on Tuesday, my mom and I took advantage of the BOGO deal at The Great Greek, in WB (use code BOGO when ordering online or at the in-restaurant kiosk; it ends 7/31), because we both really like their chicken gyros. For some reason the WB location takes a long time to cook the sandwiches, but they are always good, and we got a side of the chicken lemon soup to split, too, which is huge and big enough for two people (pro tip: get the side AS a side, not individual, and you'll get a drink plus the soup for $6; otherwise just the soup is $6).
