The Friday Five, 8/29/25: 5 things I've been up to this week

Well, August went by fast. Apologies for no Friday Five posts the past few weeks but I was a little busy having a baby and then keeping said baby alive :) see more below ...

What I've been up to *the past three weeks*:
  1. Having a baby. So right after I posted my Friday Five on Friday, August 8th, I had an OB appt., and my water (amniotic fluid) was low. They wanted me to be induced that day, but I said no—I needed to get my affairs in order, so to speak—and they were going to re-check me on August 11th (Monday), and they scheduled an induction for 8pm that day. On August 11th, my water level was slightly improved, but still low, so we went ahead with the induction, and my husband and I checked into the hospital at 8pm that day.
By around 10am on Wednesday, August 13th, I still hadn't progressed much—you need to be 10 cm dilated before they tell you to start pushing, and even on Pitocin I was 3-4 cm dilated, and in pain, until I had an epidural the night before—and my doctor recommended a C-section. My husband and I talked about it and asked the doctor a ton of questions, and then decided to proceed. Baby K was born about three hours later, and the actual C-section wasn't too bad at all, since they took out the epidural and put in a spinal tap for me, but definitely not in my birth plan. It's kinda fun she was born on the 13th, too, because my birthday also falls on the 13th, albeit in a different month.
  2. Recovering from having a baby. A C-section recovery is no joke. My husband literally had to lift me out of bed for the first few days because I couldn't move (my abdominal muscles were killing me). About 2.5 weeks later now, I am moving around much better, but it still hurts to laugh and cough sometimes, in certain positions. I also haven't been able to drive for two weeks, but I'm looking forward to driving tomorrow for my Crohn's infusion (well—not looking forward to the actual infusion, but looking forward to driving again, I mean).
  3. Figuring out how to keep a baby alive. My mother-in-law drove in from Indiana when it looked like I was going to have a C-section, and she has been here with us for the past two weeks, which has been extremely helpful—having three adults per one baby is a lot easier than I imagine two sleep-deprived adults to one baby is. My mom and dad have also been helping and they babysat for her this week when the three of us (MIL, husband, and I) went out to dinner, which was very nice.
  4. Getting takeout/dining out. On Sunday, August 10th, I went to Henry Ford WB upon suggestion of my OB, to get an NST done (non-stress test), and my blood pressure was a little high, so they wanted me to stay for four hours for observation ... I said no, but was there for about an hour. We had plans with friends that night to pick up a crib from them and also get Cheesecake Factory takeout, and I still wanted to keep those.
We've been doing a lot of Doordash/takeout with my husband and MIL the past two weeks ... we've had Culver's (twice, yum, including last night) via takeout; Pink Garlic, Royal Thai twice, and a few others, via Doordash; and tonight we might pick up Siam Spicy, in Novi, since we are hoping to stop by La-Z-Boy and get a recliner, as right now I am just feeding the baby in bed. We have an older La-Z-Boy recliner which is super nice, and we looked at Gardner White like the week before baby was born, but couldn't decide on anything, so we figure we'll go straight to the source.
On Wednesday, my parents (Grandma and Grandpa, now) were able to babysit for Baby K for the first time, because my husband and I wanted to treat my MIL to Sylvan Table, in Sylvan Lake. This was our second time there, and both times were fabulous, although I enjoyed my pasta more last time vs. the steak this time ... I was really excited to get a medium rare steak (when pregnant, you have to eat well done steak, I was doing medium well though) and it came out more medium well, although the chimichurri (see below) was delicious, and the plating was beautiful. We also shared some sort of peach custard (almost like an eggy pie) for dessert which was also great, and I had an alcoholic drink for the first time (in a restaurant, at least) in 9-10 months.
  5. Watching TV shows. Not a lot of time for that nowadays but when I pump I sometimes do, and I was able to catch up on The Summer I Turned Pretty (Prime) yesterday ... super excited for the last three episodes, although I'm sad this is the final season. I'm also mostly caught up on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? on Hulu, and I'd like to start watching The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix, as it sounds good.
