Movie Review and GIVEAWAY: The Roses {ends 11/2}
I had never even heard of The Roses until recently, but it has a fantastic cast, and it's based on The War of the Roses, the 1989 movie. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman were both fabulous in this, and five of my lucky readers will win a digital code to own the movie! (see below)
About the movie:
The combustible love story of Ivy and Theo Rose ignites at home when Jay Roach’s The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, has arrived on digital October 21 (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home) and on Blu-ray, and will arrive on DVD November 25.
Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.
Digital & Blu-ray Bonus Materials (Bonus features vary by product and retailer)
- Gag Reel
- Featurettes:
- A House To Fight For – A behind-the-front-door look at the epicenter of both beauty and acrimony. See the construction of the Roses’ home, hear from the designer and the filmmakers on their vision, and discover the actors’ wish to take everything from the house home with them.
- The Roses: An Inside Look – Hear from the cast and filmmakers about making The Roses. Learn about the actors’ connection and chemistry, and join the grounded, satirical, British, wry wit that only Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch can pull off.
- Comedy Gold – This cast is stacked with comedy talent bringing Tony McNamara’s witty dialogue to life with Jay Roach directing. Even Olivia Colman had to ask about this special cast, “How the F did we get them?”
I really enjoyed this movie, a lot more than I thought I would. It starts off with the Roses in couples therapy (see pic above), being super acerbic to each other, which definitely caught my attention, and then it shows how they have two kids but have felt estranged from each other for a while now.
I'm a fan of both Colman and Cumberbatch, but the supporting cast was also great, with SNL stars Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, in a super zany role, plus Zoe Chao and Ncuti Gatwa (Netflix's Sex Education) as colleagues. Allison Janney also has a small role near the end, as Colman's character's lawyer.
Overall I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes dark comedies, and now I'll definitely have to check out The War of the Roses, since it's based on that and I haven't seen it.
4 stars out of 5 from me.
