The Friday Five, 10/24/25: 5 things I've been up to this week
I am up early today because we had a furniture delivery, but Baby K is still asleep, so I'm enjoying a leisurely breakfast (cereal) for the first time in a while. Until she wakes up, anyways ...
What I've been up to this week:
- Attending a wedding. A friend I know from a Meetup group for board games, whom I've probably known for about 5-10 years now, got married on Saturday night at the Henry Ford (Lovett Hall, technically) and my husband and I attended it. The venue was beautiful, and it's very historical, too; there was a board up on the wall with some old clippings, news items, etc. about the venue. We didn't stay too long, only until about 10pm, but it was still nice to get all dressed up and also see my friend get married—I believe the last time we saw each other IRL was when my husband and I visited Boston in 2023, and took engagement photos, since she now lives in Boston.
- Visiting with in-laws. The original plan was for my MIL to come into town to babysit while we were attending the wedding, but my SIL and FIL ended up coming in too, Friday through Sunday, to see Baby K and us, which was nice. The visit was short, a little less than 48 hours, but we will see everyone again at Thanksgiving, when we go to Indiana for it.
- Watching TV shows and movies. Since yesterday, I've been binging Nobody Wants This, on Netflix, which just released its second season, and it's a lot of fun. I've still been liking Chad Powers a lot, on Hulu, and I watched Only Murders in the Building, also, which a friend said has its season finale next week. I've also been continuing to watch High Potential (Hulu), Love is Blind (Netflix; can we talk about how all of the couples are terrible this season?!), The Morning Show and Loot (both on AppleTV), plus Abbott Elementary (Hulu). Married at First Sight is now on Peacock, also, and just released episodes from a new season, but I haven't had time to start it yet.
I also watched a SUPER weird but also pretty good movie on Paramount+, called Shell, with Kate Hudson and Elisabeth Moss. The director is Max Minghella, aka Moss's co-star on The Handmaid's Tale, and apparently he based it on the '90s film Death Becomes Her, which I need to watch now (it's on Netflix). It had a weird twist I didn't see coming, and it's classified as a horror film, which I don't usually like / can't usually watch, but I really liked it; I'd give it 4/5 stars. - Getting our lawnmower back, and selling it. I usually save stuff like this for Yelp, but ... we used Weingartz to service our lawnmower recently. They were supposed to bring it back to us on Friday. I happened to pop my head out of our front door to retrieve a package, and saw the lawnmower being driven up the driveway ... but not our driveway, our NEIGHBOR'S -_-. I went to go get my husband to tell him this, and as we walked outside, the Weingartz truck was driving away. I called them to tell them this, and they routed me to a manager's VM, so then I left a Yelp review. They replied to the Yelp review and said I could email them, so I did, and zero response. Especially sucks because up until then, communication was pretty good with them, too, but because of this, I cannot recommend them ... (like, how hard is it to knock on someone's door and confirm it's their house?!). We did get the lawnmower back but we knocked on our neighbor's door to tell them we were doing that.
We also sold the lawnmower on FB Marketplace—this was a project that had been in the works for a while now, with the goal of having me park in the garage, especially since winter is coming soon. We still need to rearrange a few things in the garage, but then hopefully my car will fit. - Taking the baby out myself for the first time. I was nervous about this—overall it went well, IMO, with just a few hiccups. On Tuesday, I took Baby K to Berkley to see a friend and her five-month-old son. When I put the baby in the carseat, she started crying (she was hungry; I fed her and then we tried again). Berkley was fun and we also got Pink Garlic takeout—I left Baby K with my friend for about ten minutes and grabbed it for us—but when it was time to leave, it was POURING outside (another hiccup). I had brought a blanket for her in case she got cold, though, and my friend's husband recommended putting the blanket over the carseat, so she wouldn't get wet (we also have a sun cover for the carseat, so that also helped). Baby K is really good on car rides, so that was a non-issue. Overall it was a fun time, but I definitely packed the stroller (just in case) and the diaper bag BEFORE loading Baby K in the car, so I wouldn't forget (babies require so many accessories!).
