The Friday Five, 9/22/23: 5 things I've been up to this week

This week has felt long for some reason, but yesterday was mostly fun and this weekend should be as well.

What I've been up to this week:

  1. Doing nothing last weekend. We got back from Vegas around 10pm on Friday, to DTW, and probably didn't get home until around 11:30 or midnight, so last weekend I had nothing scheduled. We did order some Indian food from Doordash, from a new-to-us restaurant, and unfortunately it was just okay.
  2. Lots of influencer visits. On Tuesday, I headed to the new Tiger Sugar location in West Bloomfield—about five minutes from my fiance's house, which is awesome—and tried a few of their new Hello Kitty-themed drinks and also got to see how they make them (see the reel here). If you're in the WB area, definitely check them out—I feel like that area has a dearth of bubble tea places, so I'm especially glad to see them open.
Yesterday, I got to check out The Eagle in Detroit, kitty-corner from its sister restaurant, Bakersfield, which was a treat—I LOVE their Cincinnati location. Their menu is slightly different at this location (i.e., no Nashville Hot Chicken option, but they do have hot honey to drizzle on the chicken), but the chicken, drinks, and sides were still all great. See my reel here.
And tonight we are headed to Madam, in Birmingham—this will be my second time there, and the first time I was SO impressed—it was definitely one of the best upscale meals I have had lately. So I'm looking forward to checking that out again.
  3. Seeing Disney on Ice. One of the reasons we went to The Eagle yesterday is that we combined it with our Disney on Ice (DOI) day at Little Caesars Arena. I went with my fiance, a friend, her husband, and their two kids, and I think everyone had a great time. I used to see DOI at the Palace with my mom, before everything moved to LCA, and it was always fun, but they did an especially good job this time. DOI will be at LCA until Sunday, and you can check out the details here at my blog post.
  4. Seeing a ridiculous movie. On Wednesday, I finally had a free day so I went to go see The Retirement Plan, at my usual AMC—it had a great cast, including Nicolas Cage, Ashley Greene (from Twilight), Ron Perlman, and more, but I couldn't help thinking that they maybe spent all their money on casting and not on hiring writers for the script, because it was ridiculous, although one of those "so bad it's good" movies. The plot was interesting, at least. See my video movie review here
  5. Researching wedding venues. Honestly I started doing this in mid-August, because I knew we were getting engaged soon, possibly within the month. I haven't found a ton in Detroit/Metro Detroit I like yet, but there are a few in Ann Arbor that are possibilities. On Sunday we are visiting a winery in Fenton to check that one out and on Monday night, we are taking a very short 1-night trip to Holland/the west side of the state to visit one in Holland I already know I like—it's a restaurant/event center and I've been there 6+ times to have lunch—plus one in Saugatuck and one in Grand Rapids.
